You may remember from science class that molecules often want to move from an area where there are a lot of them to an area where there are not many of them. 这叫做扩散. One particular type of diffusion is called osmosis. This is when molecules of water move from one place to another through a membrane.
In osmosis the membrane is semi-permeable, meaning that it only lets the water molecules pass through it. It doesn’t let through any larger molecules of things that may be in the water, such as bacteria. You can see that this might be a good way to make water more clean and pure.
